Local Primary School 'Top of the Class' in recycling project

David Brighton

As I drove home tonight after picking up my children from school, I was secretly bursting with pride listening to my 8 and 5 year boys discussing their school recycling project.

After being instructed to manage the waste collections at my children's (and my old) primary school, we have set out simple changes to support the staff in implementing a recycling plan to be managed by the pupils.

These changes have included;

  • Removal of playground 'general waste' bins. The pupils will now utilise recycling stations within the school in order to recycle; crisp packets, paper, plastics and cardboard packaging.
  • Relevant signage across the school. Age appropriate posters and signs will be attached to recycling containers and areas where waste is created.
  • Food Waste to be composted onsite and used across the schools grounds.
  • Batteries to be collected separately.
  • Encouragement to parents to support the schools objectives via internal communication software.
  • We will also be present to support the newly formed 'Waste Warriors' and offer reporting to highlight improvements made.

We have been really pleased with the start made and will continue to offer the school the support needed to implement their plans. It is also a huge help that the teaching staff have been incredibly supportive with our joint plan to divert waste from landfill.

If you know of a school that would welcome our support please contact me today on 01158 373220 or at david@thewastespecialists.com
